But sadly many of the anti aging skin care products that you buy just don’t really do very much. Sadly the cosmetics and anti aging industry is are insufficiently regulated in the US and these companies can put almost any ingredient into their products without proving that are safe for people to use or that they work.

As a result there are many anti aging skin care treatments available that don’t work, and contain suspect, or known to be dangerous ingredients.

But even so there are massive numbers of skin care and anti aging products sold and advertised for their ability to make your skin look younger and you look great.

How then do you make your way through all this and find a good skin care product that works and doesn’t have scary ingredients?

This is how not to choose your anti aging products.

1. Look out for fragrances in anti aging skin care products you’re considering buying. Everyone like to smell nice and so big companies use fragrances. Look younger and smell good at the same time.

But there’s 2 problems. Firstly it’s unlikely that the skin care cream you’re buying will do very much to make you look younger.

And secondly, fragrances are chemicals and not good to put on your skin. And it’s even the same with perfumes but at least you use very little perfume on yourself, but with skin care products you apply much much more.

2. Don’t buy anti aging creams with collagen in them. Does this look counterintuitive? Just about everyone knows that the loss of collagen in your skin leads to skin sagging and wrinkles so getting more collagen in your skin must be good.

Well maybe you should and maybe you shouldn’t. It’s true that it is important to replace lost collagen, however molecules of collagen are very large and cannot enter skin pores, so putting collagen in the bottle really does nothing at all except perhaps making you feel good.

But you can increase the levels of collagen in the skin by stimulating the skin to produce more of it’s own collagen.

Why then is there collagen in the bottle and why is that well-known movie star on TV telling you how much younger she looks? The reason is that the big anti aging skin care companies know that if customers see collagen in the bottle they will buy those bottles.

Even if it doesn’t do anything for you. Even if it’s got suspect ingredients. It will sell.

That’s marketing.

But there is a problem. It costs megabucks to pay that celebrity to go on TV and tell you how great the products are, and those fancy bottles cost a lot.

So those in care and anti aging products really don’t do very much and cost a lot. But that’s fine because most people believe that if it’s really expensive it has to be good. So they pay anyway.

Should you give up on anti aging skin care products because you think they don’t work? No. There are excellent anti-aging products that work fine, are moderately priced and use ingredients known to be safe.

These products are not made by the big companies but by small niche skin care companies you won’t have heard of. They don’t spend on TV advertising which is why the products are moderately priced and why you’ve never heard of them.

Too many times people dedicate themselves to the quest for younger skin for their face. It is an old gossip’s saying that if you want to tell the real age of a person, check their hands. Ropey veins, dry or flaky skin, liver or age spots can all betray the age and put a lie to a young looking face. Basically, younger skin is plumper, has an even tone and color, and is smooth textured. As we age we lose fat from the backs of our hands, causing the veins to become prominent and ropey.
